Controversy erupted during the final match at the Hamburg Open between Alexander Zverev and Arthur Fils as the Frenchman attempted an underarm serve. The duo got into a heated argument and the chair umpire intervened to quell the matter.
The incident occurred during the third set at 5-5 30-40, with Zverev having a break point. Fils attempted an underarm serve which was initially called in but the decision was corrected by the umpire.
The 20-year-old managed to save the break point as the German hit the return out wide on the second serve. Fils was then subjected to boos from Zverev's home crowd, who were firmly in the German's corner.
Zverev commented on the attempted underarm serve and allegedly said that the young Frenchman had 'zero respect'. During the changeover, the two engaged in a heated debate and the umpire had to intervene to stop the argument from escalating.

However, the duo buried the hatchet and celebrated the biggest title of Arthur Fils' career with champagne in the presentation ceremony.
