World No. 34 Marie Bouzkova couldn't hold back tears after coming agonizingly close to winning the 2023 Jiangxi Open.

Bouzkova put on a remarkable performance at the tournament in Jiangxi, defeating the likes of Camila Osorio and Diana Shnaider en route to the final. Despite coming close with three championship points in the summit clash, she couldn't get the job done against World No. 46 Katerina Siniakova.

The 27-year-old Siniakova defeated the Czech 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in a marathon battle that lasted three hours and thirty-three minutes. The disappointment was evident on Bouzkova's face, as she burst into tears after narrowly missing out on the win.

Bouzkova has only captured one title on the main tour, the Prague Open in 2022. She also secured a runner-up finish at the 2022 Guadalajara Open in Mexico. High on emotion during the presentation ceremony, the 25-year-old graciously accepted her flowers and second-place trophy.

She's had a promising season this year, amassing 27 wins from 51 matches, including quarterfinal appearances at the Cincinnati Open and the Korea Open. The Czech also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and third round at the 2023 US Open.

Bouzkova squared off against Ons Jabeur for a place in the fourth round of the 2023 US Open. Despite winning the opening set against Jabeur, she couldn't outfox the Tunisian, while picking up an injury in the second set.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old put on a spirited display and was cheered on by spectators at the US Open. World No. 7 Jabeur touched on competing against a struggling opponent and explained that she had to play her natural game to win the match. Elaborating on the incident at the post-match press conference, Jabeur said with a laugh:

"At the end of the second set, I tried to make more [of] the point, hit it a little bit harder. And I was just trying to play my game. You know, I honestly saw her struggling [a] little bit with her legs, so I tried to make her move as much as I could. I know that's not nice but I was trying to win the match here,"

The Tunisian also admitted her surprise at her opponent's ball retrieving skills despite not being 100% fit to compete.

"And at certain times I was like, ‘is she like really injured?’ Like, I wasn't sure, she was making all my drop shots. Like, I'm either making the best drop shots or the opposite. I'm not sure," she added.

Marie Bouzkova reflected on their exhilarating run at the China Open and emphasized that they try to enjoy their tennis and fight for every point on the court. Speaking at the post-match press conference, she stated:

"Just enjoy the moment, because that's our main strength is that we enjoy so much. We just try to find a way to fight for every point and give ourselves the best chance as we can in the moment. I think that's what we did pretty much the whole week here or anywhere that we play," Marie Bouzkova
