"Jannik Sinner is always looking to the future, this is a quality that the greats have" - Matteo Berrettini
While talking in a press conference ahead of the group stage matches of the 2024 Davis Cup, Matteo Berrettini talked about Jannik Sinner. Berrettini expressed his desire to adopt some of Sinner's qualities, particularly his dedication to improve and his forward-thinking mindset.
"There are many things I would steal from Jannik. One above all, dedication to work, the ability to always want to improve. He arrived in the elite of tennis at a very young age and never wanted to stop, and if you hear him speak he is always looking to the future, this is a quality that the greats have," Berrettini said.
The former World No. 6 noted that Sinner's focus on the future is a trait only seen in the greatest athletes of the sport. He also acknowledged that he is actively working to incorporate these qualities into his own game to enhance his performance.
"That type of approach is a bit innate and a bit of work; therefore, I am trying to do the same, to continue to push, continue to find goals, feel important stimuli. It is not just about rankings or tournaments, but the joy of improving yourself," he added.
Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner have faced each other twice on the ATP tour, with the latter winning both the match-ups. Their most recent encounter was in the second round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, where Sinner secured a hard-fought victory with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(4).
