Nadal started his 2024 Madrid Open campaign with a win over 16-year-old American prodigy Darwin Blanch 6-1, 6-0. This sets him up for a second-round match against Alex de Minaur. The Spaniard avenged his defeat at the Barcelona Open last week by defeating the Aussie 7-6(6), 6-3.

Rafael Nadal took questions from the press after his win against Alex de Minaur, and was asked if his perspective changed following this huge win. The Spaniard maintained that a match does not change anything, for him it was about how his body responded to the daily training.

"My perspectives are determined by my day to day life, not a match. To have a change of perspective on the situation I have to be convinced that my physique responds, I have to regain confidence in my body, which is normal not to I have it because a lot of things have happened in recent times," he said at the press conference.

The 14-time French Open champion said that it was important for him to play matches and it was good progress to play five matches in two weeks after two years.

Then I have to regain confidence in myself at the tennis level and in every sense. Last week I played two matches, this one, if nothing strange happens. I will be able to play three. That's five games in two weeks at least. It's an important advance, I haven't been able to do it two years," he said.

Nadal will now play Pedro Cachin for a place in the fourth round.
