With the US Open underway, the tournament's first week has witnessed major upsets and exciting moments. The fourth round has already commenced, and as the tournament edges closer to the quarterfinals, a lot of big names have progressed safely.
This year's edition featured several tennis couples competing, including Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa, Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya, Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina, Anastasia Potapova and Alexander Shevchenko, as well as Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter. While some of them have safely advanced to the Round of 16, others have not been as fortunate.
On that note, let's look at how far the couples have fared at the 2024 US Open as we head into the second week:
#5 Anastasia Potapova and Alexander Shevchenko
Anastasia Potapova started her US Open campaign on a strong note, but lost to Karolina Muchova 4-6, 2-6, in the third round.
Meanwhile, her husband Alexander Shevchenko defeated Dominik Koepfer 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in the opening round. However, he was forced to retire mid-match against Frances Tiafoe in the second round, with the home favorite leading 6-4, 6-1, 1-0.
The Kazakh also competed in the men's doubles (with Sam Weissborn) but lost to the American pair of Robert Cash and James Tracy 3-6, 4-6 in the first round, ending his run.
#4 Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils
Gael Monfils and his wife, Elina Svitolina, have been one of tennis' most coveted couples. The Frenchman scored a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win over Diego Schwartzman in the opening round. However, he succumbed to Casper Ruud in the next round with a 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-7(3).
Svitolina, on the other hand, made it a round further than her husband but lost to home favorite Coco Gauff 6-3, 3-6, 3-6. On her way to the third round, the Ukrainian defeated the likes of Maria Lourdes Carle and compatriot Anhelina Kalinina.
#3 Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter
Alex de Minaur and his girlfriend, Katie Boulter, started their campaign at Flushing Meadows in high spirits. However, only De Minaur is in the Round of 16 now, where he is set to face fellow Australian Jordan Thompson on September 2. Minaur defeated Britain's Dan Evans 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-0 in the third round at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Meanwhile, 31st seed Katie Boulter kicked off her campaign with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. However, she succumbed to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 5-7, 5-7 in the second round. Boulter crashed out of the doubles competition well in the second round.
#2 Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is going strong in New York. He scored a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Christopher O'Connell in the third round, setting up a clash with home favorite Tommy Paul. Sinner is expected to go all the way this time at the tournament after the exits of big names like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Sinner's girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya succumbed to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the third round with a score of 3-6, 1-6. Despite making a solid start in New York and not losing a single set, she could not keep up the same level against the Brazilian. Kalinskaya's doubles campaign is also over with a second-round exit.
#1 Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas
Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas have been making headlines in the tennis world throughout the year with their outstanding performances. They were supposed to go all the way in the US Open, but Tsitsipas surprisingly lost 6-7, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the opening round.
Badosa, on the other hand, is still going strong, set to face Wang Yafan in the Round of 16. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in the third round at Louis Armstrong Stadium. So far, the Spaniard has only lost one set overall in New York.
Badosa and Tsitsipas paired up to play in the mixed doubles but lost 6-7, 4-6 in the first round to Italy's Giuliana Olmos and Santiago González.
