Several fans have voiced concerns over Sloane Stephens' poor performance of late following her first-round exit at the 2024 Guadalajara Open. She was defeated by World No. 152 Olivia Gadecki in straight sets.
Stephens' campaign in the North American hard court swing has been less than ideal, with first-round exits at the Citi Open, Canadian Open, and the 2024 US Open. Her struggles continued at the WTA 500 event in Mexico, where unseeded Olivia Gadecki defeated her 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round, where she will face Danielle Collins.
With the first-round exit in Mexico, Stephens' five-match losing streak, dating back to Wimbledon 2024, continues. A fan later shared this update on X.
In reply, a group of fans expressed concerns over Sloane Stephens' current form.
"What’s going with Sloane🤦🏾♂️ This is a whole grand slam winner," a fan wrote.
One fan advised Stephens to stop playing.
"Losing to gadecki ? Like just stop playing atp," they said.
"I wonder if this will be Sloane’s final season on tour?" a fan said.
A group of fans on Reddit also expressed their thoughts on Stephens' first-round defeat. A fan reflected on Stephens' career, noting her early success and later inconsistency.
"Insane career having watched the whole thing. From her beating Serena at the Aus Open at 19 (still her best result there 11 years later), inconsistency, her Slam, YEC runner up and another Slam runner up, through to it feeling like absolutely anyone can beat her only a few years later. She still achieved a lot but it felt like there could have been so much more," they said.
"Sadly not a surprising result from Sloane, hope she can find her form again," a fan chimed in.
"I thought she was done after the US Open. I kind of hope she wraps it up soon because things are looking bleak," another wrote.
Stephens faced an early exit at the Citi Open, losing to compatriot Amanda Anisimova. She then lost to Greet Minnen and Clara Burel in the first round of the Canadian Open and US Open, respectively. The 31-year-old has previously stated that she will hang up her racket if she wins her second Major title.
Sloane Stephens faces second straight first-round defeat at the US Open
Sloane Stephens, one of the home favorites for the season's last Grand Slam, saw her hopes of a deep run quashed by Clara Burel in the first round.
Stephens dominated the first set, winning 6-0. However, she couldn't maintain the momentum in the next two sets, losing 5-7, 5-7, and exiting the singles draw of the New York Major. The 31-year-old also faced a first-round exit at the US Open last year, losing to Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Since winning her first US Open title in 2017, Stephens' best performance at the tournament was reaching the quarterfinals in 2018.
