Tennis fans reacted as Carlos Alcaraz was paired with Alexander Zverev for the doubles match on day 1 at the 2024 Laver Cup. Laver Cup begins on September 20 and will conclude on September 22.
The schedule for Day 1 was recently released with Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo locking horns in the first match. They would be followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis' matchup. The Greek would be hoping to exact revenge for the 2024 US Open first-round loss. For the night session, Grigor Dimitrov will face Alejandro Tabilo. The last match will be the showdown between the pairing of Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev against Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
Fans were not impressed with Alcaraz being paired with Zverev. Some took to Reddit to share their disappointment.
"Why does Carlitos have to be teaming up with Mr domestic violence," wrote one fan.
"Why would u do this to carlos," wrote another.
Another joked that:
“We need a well liked golden retriever to balance out that pos chihuahua”
One fan explained that the 2024 Laver Cup was being staged in Germany, so Zverev would be preferred for the prime-time slot.
"I guess they have to play Zverev somewhere in the first day as it's being held in Germany. And Carlos is prime time so they got lumped together," one fan quipped.
Another fan was torn between wanting the World No. 3 to win, while simultaneously hoping the German to lose.
"Me torn between wanting rat to lose and Carlos to wn : 😵💫"
Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and more to headline Laver Cup 2024
Teams are set for the seventh edition of the Laver Cup. Team Europe will utilize the services of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, while Flavio Cobolli and Jan-Lennard Struff are the alternates. Rafael Nadal was also expected to be part of Team Europe but he pulled out of the tournament.
Team World includes Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Alejandro Tabilo, Francisco Cerundolo, and Thanasi Kokkinakis. They would look to defend their crown, having won the tournament two times in a row (2022 and 2023).
Laver Cup has a unique format, with four matches being played every day (three singles and one doubles). A win on the first day guarantees one point, while two points can be had for a win on the second day and three points for a win on the third day. The team that reaches 13 points quicker wins the tournament.
