The US Open is less than a month away and the pre-tournament odds for the women's singles event were released. It has left fans questioning the inclusion and the chances of many players.
The qualifiers of the US Open are scheduled to begin on August 19 and the main draw will take place from August 26. Many players have begun their hardcourt swing in North America with the Citi Open and the ongoing Canadian Open. However, many are yet to get on the hardcourt due to the recently concluded Paris Olympics tennis event.
Just over a fortnight away from the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, Fanduel released the odds for the women's singles event. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who won bronze at the Olympics, is the favorite according to the odds.
Following her on the list of favorites are Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka, Jessica Pegula, Donna Vekic, Mirra Andreeva, Danielle Collins, and Ons Jabeur.
The chart was posted online by an X (formerly Twitter) account:
Fans questioned the inclusion of many players on the list including Andreeva. They also asked why the French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini was omitted. One fan wrote:
"I ask one more time. Why tf is Mirra included in these f***ing charts."
"Naomi and Andreeva but not Paolini," another fan wrote.
"Paolini with two slam finals and Zheng with gold medal and slam final mean nothing against Andreeva or Jabeur even if they did absolutely nothing this season," a third fan wrote.
Here are more fan reactions to the pre-US Open women's singles odds:
"mirraball, jabba and vekic (???), three sneaks," one fan wrote.
"Now why would they set up Ons and the child like this," another fan wrote.
"Why in the world is coco so high..?" asked another fan.
Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka resume campaigns at Canadian Open; Iga Swiatek yet to kick off US Open series
The USA's Coco Gauff, Japan's Naomi Osaka, Poland's Iga Swiatek, and Russia's Mirra Andreeva participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The tennis event at the Games concluded on Sunday, August 4.
Swiatek and Andreeva have decided to delay starting their US Open series. Meanwhile, Gauff and Osaka are resuming their campaigns at the ongoing Canadian Open.
Notably, Gauff lost 500 points when she decided to skip the Citi Open title defense in favor of representing her nation at the Games. She also reached the Canadian Open quarterfinals last year and has 215 points on the line.
Swiatek participated in multiple clay court tournaments leading up to the French Open. However, she did not play any preparatory tournaments before her third-round exit at the grass courts of Wimbledon. She would be hoping to get some more practice in for the US Open - an event she won in 2022.
