World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was ousted by fifth seed Daniil Medvedev after an exhilarating Wimbledon 2024 quarterfinal clash between the pair on Tuesday, July 9. Fans later lauded the Russian and went on to predict how the men's singles event at this year's edition of the prestigious grass-court Major would unfold following Sinner's exit.

Medvedev came into the match against Sinner on a five-match losing streak against the Italian, despite still leading 6-5 in the pair's ATP Tour head-to-head. The World No. 1 clinched a tight first set 7-6(7), but Medvedev leveled things up by taking the second 6-4. The Russian won the third set as well [7-6(4)], where Sinner was plagued by health and fitness concerns.

However, in the fourth, the Italian pegged Medvedev back (6-2), as the World No. 5 made several uncharacteristic errors. Sinner though, ran out of steam in the fifth and deciding set, with the Russian capitalizing on the World No. 1's clearly diminishing energy reserves and sealing his own progress to the Wimbledon semifinals for the second straight year.

Several fans on X (formerly Twitter) praised Medvedev for snapping his losing streak against Sinner.

"Nobody beats Daniil Medvedev 6 times in a row!!!," a fan wrote.
"For a guy that has historically been bad on grass to beat the most in-form player this year is a huge result!" commented another fan.
"A big moment for Medvedev, who had lost *five* consecutive against Sinner and all pretty big matches -- finals or semifinals. No celebration as usual," another fan chimed in.

Many others opined that with Sinner's exit, the men's singles title is almost guaranteed to go Carlos Alcaraz's way again. Defending champion Alcaraz and Medvedev are set to face each other in the semis on Friday, July 12.

"The tournament is now Alcaraz’s to lose," wrote a fan.
"Now Carlos can win the tournament," another fan weighed in.
"Normally I'll be inclined to let the revenge tour continue, but Medvedev is definitely folding against Djokovic. Only Alcaraz stands a chance in the final," yet another fan opined.

At a press conference following his disappointment exit from Wimbledon 2024, Jannik Sinner laid bare the physical struggles he experienced during the match, which proved telling as the Italian, for the most part, looked far from his best.

"This morning I already didn’t feel great. I had some problems and then with the fatigue. It was tough," Jannik Sinner said.

The World No. 1 went on to praise rival Medvedev, before opening up about his interaction with the physio, who advised the Italian to take a break after watching him moving gingerly.

"Nothing to take away from Daniil. I think he played very smart, good tennis. That’s it. I went off the court. I actually didn’t want to go off. The physio told me it was better to take some time because he watched me and I didn’t seem in shape to play. I was struggling physically. It wasn’t an easy moment. I tried to fight with what I had today," Jannik Sinner added.

The reigning Australian Open champion's latest loss to Medvedev marks only his fourth defeat of what has been a stellar season so far. He currently has a 13-4 win-loss record at the London Major.
