Coco Gauff had strong words for a fan who claimed she took help while cooking a Thanksgiving potluck. Gauff recently won the 2024 WTA Finals singles title, becoming the first American to achieve it since Serena Williams in 2014.
Gauff had a stellar 2024 season, winning her first Grand Slam tournament doubles title at the French Open. Despite making a fourth-round exit from Wimbledon, Gauff made history as the youngest athlete to become the flag-bearer for the US at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Games.
She continued her momentum at the 2024 China Open, clinching her second WTA 1000 and eighth career singles title. Her success at the WTA Finals made her the youngest player to achieve the title since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
After concluding her season, as the 20-year-old embarked on the holiday season, Gauff took to her Instagram handle to post a reel featuring her cousins with their potluck dishes:
"My name is Coco and I'm the host and I made sweet potato pie, banana bread and bought a honey-baked ham and bud's chicken."
However, in the comments, a fan suggested she took help from staff:
"Coco. You know you can't cook. Your staff made that for you......"
Coco Gauff replied to this comment, rubbishing the fan's claims. Gauff said,:
"@lenon705 you don’t even know me. lol and what staff? all I made was pie and banana bread it’s really not that hard."
This isn't the first time that Gauff has been involved in events regarding cooking.
Coco Gauff shared her failed banana bread story after moving to her new house alone
Having clinched her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, Coco Gauff had a wobbly beginning in 2024 but compensated with strong performances at the year-end, including her title-winning feat at the WTA Finals.
In a post-match interview in Riyadh, Gauff shared her experiences of living independently and detailed some of her cooking exploits. She had shared on social media earlier that she had moved out of her parents' home.
Talking about a failed banana bread-making story, she said:
"The bananas were like, too ripe, because you're supposed to wait. I think I waited too long, so I threw them away. I tried to, like, freestyle it, without it. And that came out awful."
She further added:
"I tried to make it for my fitness coach for his birthday, but then when I tested it, I was, 'I can not give him this.' ... I was really disappointed in that, because banana bread is what I'm good at. I just thought that I would be good enough to maybe, you know, skip a couple ingredients."
Gauff separated from her coach Brad Gilbert this year, hiring Matt Daley in September.
