25th seed Martina Trevisan booked her place in the third round of the Miami Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Japan's Nao Hibino in the second round.

The match was not without controversy as Trevisan's team were being very loud throughout the match on an otherwise quiet court, an attitude that did not sit well with Hibino.

The Japanese made her feelings known to Trevisan during their post-match handshake, coldly telling the Italian that her team did not have any "respect" for other players.

"Your team has zero respect for players," Hibino said.

Several fans also took to social media to criticize Martina Trevisan and her team for the latter's antics during the match.

"When an extremely polite player as Hibino, and as all Japanese, express herself in this way, it means that something really unacceptable has been done on court. Unfortunately this happens quite often with Trevisan," one fan tweeted.

One fan criticized Trevisan for giving a thumbs up to her team after they shouted.

"The fact that Trevisan proceeded to immediately give a thumbs up sign to her team as if to signal " guys it worked!!" Is messed up," the fan's tweet read.

After beating Nao Hibino, Martina Trevisan will next take on the unseeded Claire Liu in the third round of the Miami Open.

Liu was supposed to take on Iga Swiatek in the second round of the tournament but the Pole eventually withdrew from the tournament due to fitness reasons. The American instead faced lucky loser Julia Grabher and made the most out of her good fortune as she beat the Austrian 6-4, 6-3 to book her place in the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.

Martina Trevisan and Claire Liu will lock horns for the second time, with the Italian winning their previous encounter 6-2, 6-1 in the final of the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Rabat.

Whoever out of the two comes out on top will be up against either 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or 24th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round in Miami. If Trevisan beats Liu, then she will play in the Round of 16 of a WTA 1000 tournament for just the second time in her career.
