The Indo-French unseeded pair of Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti pulled off a massive upset on Wednesday, beating Sander Gillen and Joran Vliegen 4-6, 7-6, 10-6 in the opening round of the BMW Open.
Bhambri and Olivetti didn’t start the game on the right note as they lost the first set 4-6. However, the duo went on to beat Monte-Carlo Masters champions and advanced to the next round.
It is worth mentioning that Gill-Vliegen won the Monte-Carlo Masters, last week and were one of the favorites to clinch the BMW Open title. As fate would have it, the French Open finalists received a massive jolt in the opening round, itself.
India tennis player, Yuki Bhambri, is currently 59th ranked in the ATP doubles rankings. He called it quits from the men’s singles in January this year to solely focus on doubles.
Bhambri- Olivetti has shown fine form, of late. The doubles pair made headlines after reaching the semi-finals of the Marrakech Open. Bhambri and Olivetti stunned Colombian Nicholas Barrientos and Rafael Matos of Brazil in the quarter-final with the score line reading 7-6, 6-7, 10-7.
However, they failed to advance, suffering a 5-7, 6-3, 7-10 defeat in an intense encounter against second-seeded Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler of Austria.
Rutuja Bhosale enthralls in W50 Shenzhen
Meanwhile, Rutuja Bhosale has impressed one and all with her stunning display at the W50 Shenzhen (a hard court event), a women’s singles event in China. She made her way into the pre-quarter-finals and will face a tough opponent in Liu Fangzhou.
Speaking of women’s doubles, Rutuja reached the quarter-finals in partnership with YeXinMa. The duo will face Prarthana Thombare and Arianne Hartono in the quarters.
In September 2023, Rutuja bagged the gold medal in the women’s doubles event at the Asian Games. After being a set down, the duo orchestrated a remarkable comeback to win the game 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 against the Chinese Taipei duo of Tsung-hao Huang and En-shuo Liang in the final.
