Emma Navarro vs Beatriz Haddad Maia preview

After a first-round bye, third seed Emma Navarro will face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round of the HSBC Championships 2025.
Navarro started the year on a slow note but still managed to make the last eight at the Australian Open, losing to Iga Swiatek. She followed a disappointing Middle East swing by winning the Merida Open, her second career title and first at the WTA 500 level.
Navarro had another dip in form and wrapped up the hardcourt swing with early exits from Indian Wells and Miami. She started the clay season with a quarterfinal finish at the Charleston Open. She didn't win back-to-back matches for the remainder of the clay swing. She capped off her time on clay with a 6-0, 6-1 beatdown at the hands of Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round of the French Open.
Haddad Maia kicked off her campaign at Queen's Club against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The two were on even footing until the halfway mark in the first set. The Czech then bagged four games on the trot to take the set.
However, Kvitova couldn't sustain this momentum, and Haddad Maia wore her down over the course of the match. The latter secured a single break of serve in each of the next two sets to wrap up a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win.

Emma Navarro vs Beatriz Haddad Maia prediction

Aside from a couple of tournaments, Navarro has underperformed everywhere else. She hasn't won consecutive matches in her last five tournaments. She has a 17-13 record for the season thus far.
Haddad Maia lost nine matches in a row at one point this year. She improved her record for the year to 7-16 following her win over Kvitova. She will now aim to win back-to-back matches for the third time this season.
Navarro and Haddad Maia have crossed paths twice this year. The former came out on top in Stuttgart with a 6-3, 6-0 win, while the latter staged a comeback to win in Strasbourg.
Haddad Maia is a pretty solid player on grass, winning back-to-back titles on the surface in 2022. Navarro has taken a liking to grass as well, reaching a couple of semifinals in Bad Homburg and the Wimbledon quarterfinals. While both are far from their best this year, the American has given a better account of herself on grass in recent times, making her the favorite to win this contest.
Pick: Emma Navarro to win in three sets.
