Madison Keys vs Anastasia Zakharova preview

Second seed Madison Keys will square off against qualifier Anastasia Zakharova in the second round of the HSBC Championships 2025.
Keys entered the Australian Open on the heels of a title-winning run at the Adelaide International. She carried this momentum into the Melbourne Major to capture her maiden Grand Slam title. She saved a match point against Iga Swiatek in the semifinals and beat two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Sabalenka snapped Keys' 16-match winning streak in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open, while she was upset by Alexandra Eala in the third round of the Miami Open. She had a decent clay swing, culminating in a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Coco Gauff. As one of the top four seeds here, she received a bye into the second round.
While Keys was the recipient of a first-round bye, Zakharova fought her way through the qualifying rounds to book her spot in the main draw. She was up against Donna Vekic in the first round. Despite the vast gulf in experience between the two, the qualifier punched way above her weight. She broke her opponent's serve thrice en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Madison Keys vs Anastasia Zakharova prediction

Zakharova's first-round win over the 21st-ranked Vekic marked her maiden main draw win this year. It was also her first win against a top 50 player and a big scalp as well, considering Vekic was a Wimbledon semifinalist last year. The Russian didn't drop her serve even once and saved all four break points that she faced.
Keys is having one of the best seasons of her career. While she couldn't replicate the success she achieved on hardcourts during the clay swing, grass offers her another shot at glory. She has made the last eight at Wimbledon on two occasions and has three titles on grass to her name.
Since this will be Keys' first match on grass, she could be off to a slow start. Zakharova has already played three matches here since she came through the qualifiers and has gotten used to the surface. She could give the American a tough time if she doesn't find her range quickly.
However, Keys' big serve and ferocious groundstrokes are tough to neutralise once she gets going. Zakharova has never faced a player of this calibre before, and even if she takes an early lead, the American has the tools to seize control of the proceedings from her.
Pick: Madison Keys to win in straight sets.
