McCartney Kessler vs Zheng Qinwen preview

McCartney Kessler is all set to take on the top seed and World No. 5 Zheng Qinwen in the second round of the 2025 Queen's Club Championships. Kessler has reached two finals in 2025, winning the title at the Hobart International, where she won 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 against Elise Mertens in the final. She also reached the final of the ATX Open, losing 5-7, 2-6 against Jessica Pegula.
However, the clay season was atrocious for Kessler, as she could not win a single Tour-level match on the surface. She had first-round exits in Rouen, Madrid, Rome, Strasbourg, and Roland Garros, where she lost 5-7, 6-7 (3) to Elena-Gabriela Ruse. However, she snapped the losing streak on grass, winning 6-2, 6-4 against Francesca Jones in the first round of the Queen's Club Championships.
Meanwhile, Zheng Qinwen is coming into the grass season on the back of some good form, as she has reached at least the Quarterfinals in five of her last six events. This streak started during the Sunshine Double, where she reached the last eight in both Indian Wells and Miami, losing against the likes of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
Zheng's best result of the season came on clay as she reached the semifinal of the Italian Open, losing 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-7 (4) against Coco Gauff. She followed it up with a quarterfinal run at the French Open, losing 6-7 (3), 3-6 against Aryna Sabalenka. This is going to be her first grass-court match of the season as she got an opening-round bye at the Queen's Club Championships.

McCartney Kessler vs Zheng Qinwen prediction
Kessler has not reached a grasscourt final, as all her career finals have been on the hard courts. Even on the Challenger and the ITF Tours, where she has a combined five final appearances, all of them have been on hard courts.
Zheng has been poor on grass, with only a 27 percent win rate on the surface. Her biggest career achievements have come on the hard courts (reaching the final of the 2024 Australian Open) and the clay courts (winning Olympic gold at Roland Garros last year).
Zheng is the favorite for the coming match as she has been in good form recently and is the higher-ranked player.
