The spokesperson of World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has said that the 28-year old is recovering satisfactorily from his appendicitis and will be under antibiotics for at least 5 more days.

The Mallorcan, winner of 14 grand slams, returned to the tennis court for his first competitive tournament since Wimbledon in last week’s Beijing open, before being detected of the illness ahead of the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard was knocked out in the quarter-finals in Beijing by Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

He returned to Barcelona for further tests, following his loss in the second-round to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 at the Shanghai Masters.

"In medical terms, his development is satisfactory and he is currently not showing any symptoms," Nadal's spokesman said in a statement.

"The (antibiotics) treatment will continue for 4-5 days and depending on his recovery, the necessary decisions will be taken on further treatment”, he added. The nine-time French Open champion started to feel some pain in his abdomen last Saturday and was diagnosed with appendicitis at a hospital on Sunday.

Nadal said he would play an indoor hard court tournament in Basel, Switzerland followed by the Paris Masters and finishing off with the ATP tour finals in London, the last tournament of the season. Following that the Spaniard will have to undergo a surgery to remove the appendix and then hope to return to the circuit, in time for start of the 2015 season.

Nadal will be replaced by Roger Federer as the new World No.2, when the rankings are updated on Monday.
