Rio Olympics 2016: Mirza/Bopanna's match postponed due to heavy rain

The mixed doubles game between Mirza/Bopanna and the Stosur/Peels has been postponed after the rain played foul on today’s proceedings. It was torrential weather conditions at Rio and all the courts are now soaking wet.

Tennis action was scheduled to start at 7:00 tonight IST but was later delayed by an initial two hours. That delay continued to extend with the rain not ceasing. In the end, the play had to be rescheduled for late night which meant most of the matches today had to be cancelled.

The event will now take place tomorrow and will mean that, players in the singles round will have to play several matches on the same day as a consequence of participation in several events.

Mirza/Bopanna are now most likely to play tomorrow night around the same time the match was scheduled today i.e 12:00 AM. The pair have been seeded 4th as a result of which will not meet any of the top seeded teams until the semi-final round.

The news comes as a frustration for several ardent fans and now people around the world will have to wait another day to watch their favourite stars in action. Earlier in the tournament both Indian Mens’ and Women’s pairs crashed out in the first round itslef.

Paes andBopanna went out rather tamely to the Polish team while Mirza and Prarthana gave an admirable fight but could not find enough to get past the Chinese pair. Now all hopes are pinned on the mixed doubles pair to try and bring home a medal.
