Rohan Bopanna overtook Leander Paes to become India’s highest ranked doubles player at the moment. Bopanna is currently ranked 21, three places ahead of Paes.

Bopanna and Florin Mergea combined to win the Madrid Open last week which helped them gain 1000 points. The Indo-Romanian pair beat Nenad Zimonjic and Marcin Matkowski  6-2 6-7(5) 11-9 in the final.

Bopanna’s highest ranking was No. 3 in the world when he partnered Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi in July 2013. The 35-year-old started off the year partnering Canadian Daniel Nestor. The duo won titles in Sydney and Dubai before their split.

In the singles, Somdev Devvarman continues to be India’s top ranked player at No. 173 in the world. He is closely followed by 2009 junior Australian Open champion Yuki Bhambri who jumped six spots to be ranked 180.

Saketh Myneni also improved his ranking by ten places to go up to 229.

In women’s singles, Ankita Raina jumped six places to be ranked at 229. Sania Mirza is still the World No. 1 in doubles. However, the Indo-Swiss pair of Mirza and Martina Hingis have conceded their top spot in teams’ event to Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova..
