Run-Up to WTA Finals Singles: Here's who has qualified

With just 2 days to go for the WTA Finals, Singapore will deck up on 23rd October to play host to the season-ender tournament. For the first time, in quite a while, Serena Williams won’t be leading the way to the Finals by topping the list with the most points. Having suffered a shoulder injury, she had to withdraw from the event.

1. Angelique Kerber

Serena’s absence and currently staggering form paved the path clear for the new World Number 1. Angelique Kerber to book herself the top berth in the the WTA Finals, this year. Having won the Australian Open and the recently concluded US Open, the German is on an all-time high.

2. Agnieszka Radwanska

The Polish World Number 2 Radwanska qualified for the Finals by winning the Shenzhen Open, New Haven Open and Beijing Open. Her results in the Grand Slams were more or less impressive too which secured her the second berth in the WTA Finals.

3. Simona Halep

Making it to the quarter finals of the US Open and battling it out bravely with Serena Willams, Halep has been a promising player to watch. Winning the Bucharest, Montreal and Madrid Open’s, she has booked herself a spot on the coveted list of finalists.

4. Karolina Pliskova

Czech player Pliskova was the 4th person to qualify for the WTA Finals, is relatively new on the block with the Cincinnati and Nottingham titles in her tally.

5. Garbine Muguruza

Spanish player Muguruza has impressed this year. She won the Clay Court Championship at Roland Garros this year and was the 5th one to qualify.

6. Madison Keys

The winner of the Birmingham Open, US player Madison Keys was the 6th person to make it to the Finals.

7. Dominika Cibulkova

Winning the Katowice and Eastbourne titles, Slovakian sensation Cibulkova booked herself a ticket to the Finals in the 7th Place.

The 8th position is still empty and the contenders for the spot are Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova and British player Johanna Konta.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is currently in the semifinals at the Kremlin Cup in Russia

Svetlana Kuznetsova has qualified for the semis in the Kremlin Cup. While Johanna Konta is in the third round of the Hong Kong Open. Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, actually had the most points among Kuznetsova and Konta. She was more likely to qualify for the Finals but she had to retire at the last minute in the Kremlin Cup due to a wrist injury.

Kuznetsova is currently playing the semi-finals at the Kremlin Cup, while Konta is in the Third Round at the Hong Kong Open; it looks slanted for Kuznetsova to win the final spot, although she is currently behind in the points to Konta.
