Rusedski says it is wrong to write off Andy Murray right now

What's the story?

There have been a lot of conversations recently surrounding Andy Murray's comeback from a surgery that nearly ended his career. Whilst the consensus amofans and pundits is one of happiness to see the former world number 1 return, there have been intense discussions about whether he can challenge the Big 3 like he used to.

Whilst Goran Ivanisevic was recently quoted as saying Murray had "no chance" to win another Grand Slam, former British number 1, Greg Rusedski, was quick to repudiate this claim and argued that people should write off Murray at their peril.

In case you didn't know

Before Murray's career was halted by injury, the Scot had achieved so much. In addition to winning 3 Grand Slam titles, the Scot reached world number 1, won 2 Olympic gold medals, the ATP World Tour finals, and a whole host of Masters 1000 titles too.

The heart of the matter

Whilst the tennis world is rejoicing at the return of Andy Murray, there has been many questions as to whether he can return to his peak form again. As mentioned, whilst some have written him off completely, others have not been so quick to make bold predictions such as that.

In response to these doubters, Greg Rusedski said: “I don’t think ‘can’t’ is the right word, I think that it’s incredibly difficult as everyone has alluded to." He added, “The challenge with the best-of-five-set matches is massive but we all know that with Andy Murray if you say that he can’t do something, he loves to prove people wrong.

Rusedski concluded his argument by suggesting “I think it’s very unlikely but I would never, with all of these top guys it’s very dangerous to write them off.”

Rusedski offers a more balanced view on Murray's return, although the odds are stacked against the Scotsman to win another Grand Slam, it would be wrong to say it is impossible. Federer and Nadal both sustained bad injuries and managed to win multiple Grand Slam titles afterwards.

Whilst it would be wrong to put Murray in their bracket, he is no slouch on the tennis court and should his body allow him to once again reach his best, then there is no reason why he can't do well at the Grand Slams again.
