Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis progressed through to the semifinals of the China Open after beating Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova 7-6 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The opening set saw the Indo-Swiss pair trailed their opponents 1-5 as they found it hard to get into their groove but from that point on, they started to raise their intensity, improving upon both their first and second serves and taking the set into a tiebreak which they clinched to win the opening set 7-6.

The second set was a much more regular affair for the numero uno ranked pair as they carried their momentum into the second set, 81% of their first service points and 54% of their second serve points to win the set 6-4 and move into the semifinals of the tournament.

The pair of Mirza and Hingis have been in exceptional form throughout this year, having got to World No.1 in Women’s doubles and have also two Grand Slams- Wimbledon and the US Open.

They also won the Wuhan Open last week beating Romanian duo of Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu in straights sets 6-2 6-3.
