Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis win the Doubles title at Wimbledon

The top seeds in the competition kept their nerves till the end to win

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis had to come from a set down to win the Ladies Doubles final at Wimbledon beating the Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6 and 7-5. The final was played between the top two seeds in the competition with the Indo-Swiss pair being the top seeds in the competition.

Mirza and Hingis got off to the worst possible start with Sania’s serve being broken in the very first game of the game, but the Indo-Swiss pair fought back in the second game itself to break and bring the game level at 1-1. Hingis showed her experience in big games when she lobbed the ball over to earn the team a break point.

With the scores level, both teams were just holding their respective serves and it looked like they were headed for a tie-breaker when Makarova-Vesnina broke the Hingis serve with the score at 6-5 with an opportunity to serve for the set which they gladly took.

The second set went by without any major event with both teams serving well to keep the pressure on the opponents. Mirza-Hingis came close to breaking a couple of times, but the Russian pair were able to keep their composure and they took the game into a tie-breaker.

The World No. 1’s took a 3-0 lead in no time, but the Russian pair pegged them back to 5-4 and to being level on serve.Again Hingis rose to the occasion with a winner down the line to put her team a point away from leveling up the match. They were able to do that on the very next point to take the game into a deciding set.

Sania and Martina keep their nerve when it mattered the most

The Second seeds then took the lead in the fourth game of the third and were well worth their lead till they got the opportunity to serve for the Championship. Mirza and Hingis knew they had to win to stay in the match and quickly took a 0-40 lead, but the Russian pair fought back valiantly to bring the score back to deuce. That, however, proved futile as Mirza and Hingis won a point each to get the team level on serve.

The Indo-Swiss pair then got level on score with a Mirza passing shot from behind the baseline. Following the shot the game had to be stopped to close the roof at centre court which took 10 minutes.

Following the resumption of the match Mirza and Hingis broke their opponents score. With Hingis serving for the match, the match was as good as over and the Indo-Swiss pair wrapped it nicely for their first Wimbledon title with Hingis winning the title after 17 years and Mirza winning it for the first time in her career.
