Somdev Devvarman wins first match since comeback from shoulder injury

India’s former top ranked men’s player Somdev Devvarman has won his first match since coming back form shoulder surgery in July.

The 27-year-old Indian upset 4th seed Mischa Zverev 4-6 7-5 6-4 in the first round of the ATP Challenger event in Charlottesville, USA. Devvarman was down 1-4 in the final set before coming back to win the last 5 games of the match in a row.

Devvarman was 0-6 since coming back at the Olympics from a shoulder injury that needed surgery in January and forced him to miss the first six months of the season. The Indian was ranked as high as No. 62 last year but has since dropped to No. 733 in the rankings due his absence from the circuit and lack of success since June.

Somdev will meet qualifier Taro Daniel for a place in the quarterfinals.
