Ben Shelton vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert preview

After a first-round bye, third seed Ben Shelton will lock horns with qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round of the Boss Open 2025.
Shelton advanced to the second Major semifinal of his career at the Australian Open at the start of the year. He beat the likes of Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti before going down to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. His next best result was a quarterfinal showing at the BNP Paribas Open, losing to Jack Draper.
Shelton reached the biggest clay court final of his career at the BMW Open in Munich, an ATP 500 event. He came up short against Alexander Zverev in the summit clash. He concluded the clay swing with his first fourth-round finish at the French Open. He gave Carlos Alcaraz a tough fight but lost to him in four sets.
Herbert came through the qualifying rounds in Stuttgart with wins over Maximilian Marterer and Li Tu. He was up against Damir Dzumhur in the first round. A single break of serve in the Frenchman's favor sealed the first set for him. He was 3-0 up in the second set when his opponent was forced to call it quits due to an injury, thus sending him into the next round.
Ben Shelton vs Pierre Hugues-Herbert head-to-head

Ben Shelton vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert prediction

Shelton has posted some solid results throughout the season to compile a 17-11 record so far. He will now aim to continue his good run of form on grass. He has a shot at cracking the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time this week, provided he goes one round further than Daniil Medvedev, who's competing in a different tournament.
Shelton reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, his best result on grass so far. He also made the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Championships prior to that. While it wasn't the way he wanted to advance, Herbert has reached the second round here thanks to his opponent's mid-match retirement. He improved his record for the year to 4-3.
While Herbert has a 10-40 record against top 20 players in his career, he has a 3-2 record against them on grass. However, his last top 20 win was in 2021 and the last time he beat a top 20 player on grass was in 2019. Given the Frenchman's struggles against quality opposition over the past few years, Shelton shouldn't have a problem in making a winning start to his grass swing.
Pick: Ben Shelton to win in straight sets.
