Alex Michelsen vs Gael Monfils preview
The opening round of the 2025 Stuttgart Open will have the young Alex Michelsen taking on the seasoned Gael Monfils in a clash of players from two different generations.
Michelsen, the seventh seed at this year’s tournament, comes into the grass swing on a five-match losing streak on the ATP Tour and an overall 13-13 win-loss record for the season. The last time he won a match was back in April at Houston.
The American did, however, win a title in May at the Challenger level, taking home the trophy in Estoril.

Monfils, meanwhile, continues to enjoy a resurgence, even though it has been limited to quicker surfaces. He has to his name a title on the hardcourts of Auckland and deep runs at the Australian Open and Miami, which have helped him put together a win-loss of 17-8 for the season so far.
The Frenchman has, however, been in a bit of a slump of late, having won just three matches in his last four tournaments. He will look to change that heading into the next leg of the season.
Alex Michelsen vs Gael Monfils head-to-head
The two players have never crossed paths on the ATP Tour before, so their current head-to-head stands at a 0-0 deadlock.

Alex Michelsen vs Gael Monfils prediction

Neither Alex Michelsen nor Gael Monfils is the most comfortable on grass, and they would both rather play in conditions that allow room for longer rallies and more defensive work.
That said, the Frenchman’s longevity means that he has plenty of grass matches under his belt. He does have a tour level final on the surface to his name (Eastbourne 2017) and possesses a big serve that he can turn into a weapon.
Monfils is placed at No. 22 in the ATP serve rating for the 2025 season, way ahead of Michelsen who sits at No. 39. He also thundered down 30 aces in his two matches at the French Open and will rely on the shot to win even more easy points on grass.
Michelsen does not have a standout weapon and instead relies on his steady baseline game to win points, which might not be the best strategy for grasscourts. That, added with his general lack of familiarity with the surface, may spell doom for him in the end.
Prediction: Monfils to win in three sets.
