Tennis: Anikita, Rutuja bow out at Ganesh Naik ITF tournament

Vashi (Maharashtra), Dec 11 (IANS) Indians Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale were shown the door along with three other seeds, Diana Marcinkevica (2), Gioia Barbeiri (3) and Jade Windley (6) in the second round of the $25,000 Ganesh Naik ITF Women’s tennis tournament here Wednesday.

India’s top player Ankita Raina, seeded fifth, raised hopes of a win but was squarely betaen by Thai player Peangtarn Plipuech in a two-hour tussle. Plipuech came back from a first set loss to win 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-1.

Georgia’s eighth seeded Oksana Kalashnikova ended the run of another Indian wild card entrant Rutuja Bhosale 6-2, 6-3, to make it to the last eight.

In other upsets, Great Britain’s doubles specialist Anna Smith currently ranked 572, registered one of the biggest upsets of the day accounting for second seeded Latvian Marcinkevica 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 while 18-year old Kamila Kerimbayeva of Kazakhstan, runner-up at the Pune event last week, stunned third seeded Italian Barbeiri 6-2, 6-1.

Armenian qualifier Ani Amraghyan registered the fourth upset of the day with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over sixth seeded British player Windley.
