Leylah Fernandez vs Karolina Muchova preview

16th seed Leylah Fernandez will take on 2023 French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova in the first round of the women's singles competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (July 27).
Fernandez's results have been on an upswing since last year. Since guiding Canada to their first-ever BJK Cup title last November, the 21-year-old has recorded consistent results on the WTA Tour. She has won nine of her last 13 matches, which includes a runner-up finish at the Eastbourne International last month.
The World No. 24 is set to compete at her second Olympics in Paris. She reached the second round at the Games three years ago in Tokyo, losing to eighth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova.
Muchova, on the other hand, suffered a wrist injury following a breakout 2023 season that saw her reach the final and the semifinals of the French Open and the US Open, respectively. The 27-year-old made her much-awaited comeback to the tour in June.
After a slow start, the Czech found her groove during a run to the final of last week's Palermo Open. Although she is making her Olympic debut this year, she is familiar with finding her way to victory at Roland Garros.
Leylah Fernandez vs Karolina Muchova head-to-head

Leylah Fernandez vs Karolina Muchova prediction

Fernandez is one of the gutsiest shotmakers on the women's circuit. The Canadian is adept at rallying and creating angles from the baseline. Her strengths will keep her in good stead at Stade Roland Garros. The Paris Olympics venue saw her reach the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open following a surprise runner-up finish at the US Open the year prior.
Muchova possesses more variety than Fernandez, though, thanks to her quick-strike style of play and a delectable slice. The Czech, however, has just as underwhelming a first serve. This weakness will be likely exploited by her younger opponent, who is also the more seasoned player in 2024.
Pick: Fernandez in straight sets.
