Peyton Stearns vs Lesia Tsurenko preview

Local favorite Peyton Stearns will face Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of the 2024 US Open next week.
Stearns has been through a rough patch recently, as she dropped 12 of her 19 tour-level outings by early May. However, the American sprung up a welcome surprise towards the end of the month, winning her maiden WTA title in Rabat against all odds.
The 22-year-old followed up the above result with a last-eight run at the recently concluded Canadian Open, where she lost to eventual champion Jessica Pegula. She will be hopeful of replicating the form that she showed at last year's US Open, which saw her reach the fourth round.
Tsurenko, meanwhile, hasn't been as successful as Stearns lately. The Ukrainian has lost 15 of her 25 competitive matches this year. While the 35-year-old has failed to reach the quarterfinals of a single tournament in 2024, she can take pride in making it to the last eight at the US Open six years ago.
Peyton Stearns vs Lesia Tsurenko head-to-head
Stearns has never faced Tsurenko on the WTA tour, so their head-to-head record stands at 0-0.

Peyton Stearns vs Lesia Tsurenko prediction

Stearns is one of the most promising youngsters on the WTA tour. The American has shown impressive aggressive intent from the baseline in 2024, with her dead-flat forehand being her game's USP. Currently ranked 47th in the world, she will make huge strides on hardcourt in the years to come, thanks to her playing style.
Not unlike Stearns, Tsurenko is also a big hitter from the baseline. The former World No. 23 likes time on her shots, though, and it often pays off on her forehand wing. She also has enough match-playing experience to be able to mix up play when things aren't going her way.
The keys for both players will be to dominate the proceedings with their forehands. Although Tsurenko is ranked well below her younger opponent, she is a good upset pick in the first-round matches at the US Open.
Pick: Tsurenko in three sets.
