Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov knocked out 13th seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain at the Western & Southern Open on Monday (12th August) while Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber beat two-time Cincinnati finalist Mardy Fish.
Grigor Dimitrov took an hour and 27 minutes to wrap up a straight sets win over 13th seed Nicolas Almagro in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday.
The Bulgarian was taken to a tie-break in the opening set but won it 7-3.
Dimitrov fired nineteen aces on his way to victory and will now come up against American Brian Baker in the second round, who has an ATP ranking of 185.
Baker overcame Denis Istomin 7-5, 6-3 in his opening round match to set up the encounter with Dimitrov.
Two-time Cincinnati finalist Mardy Fish bowed out in the first round after he was beaten by Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and twenty-five minutes.
Fish reached the final in 2003, where he lost to Andy Roddick and he was beaten in the 2010 decider by Roger Federer.
It was only the fourth ATP World Tour event of the season for Fish, who has been suffering from heart problems.
Next up for Kohlschreiber is fifth seed Roger Federer, the Swiss had a bye into the second round.
