Haven’t we got countless examples of what a superhero Serena Williams can be on the tennis court? Well, recently the World No. 1 and 21-time Grand Slam champion decided to exhibit her superhero skills off court as well – to catch a phone thief!
The 34-year-old, who took a break from the tennis Tour after her US Open semi-final loss, shared an anecdote on her Facebook page about how she encountered a thief at a restaurant on Tuesday. The vivid description was exciting and amusing to read and Williams attached a photo of herself in Superwoman outfit with the story, giving a hint of how empowered she felt that evening.
The top-ranked player went on to add that her ‘superhero’ sense had alerted her to watch over that man as her phone was sitting in a separate chair. Seeing him there for too long, she suspected something wrong.
““Is he a customer?” I thought “Is he waiting on the bathroom?” nonetheless I tried to shake this eerie feeling. However, I kept watching him from the corner of my eye,” the legend wrote.
Serena’s premonition was proved right! The man turned out to be a ‘common petty thief’ and soon made a dash for the street with her phone!
The next sequence of events was straight out of a Hollywood action movie which totally justifies her sharing of the Superwoman photo.
Serena shouted and instinctively ran after the man. She put the details of her chase elaborately in her write-up, which makes it super thrilling to read.
“I jumped up, weaved my way in and out of the cozy restaurant (leaping over a chair or two) and chased him down. He began to run but I was too fast. (Those sprints came in handy) I was upon him in a flash!”
Just like she always does on the tennis court, this time also, all she does is win. Not only did she win back her phone, she also embarrassed the robber in the most unexpected way!
“In the most menacing yet calm no nonsense voice I could muster, I kindly asked him if he “accidentally” took the wrong phone. He stumbled on his words probably not expecting this to happen. While he was thinking of the right thing to say and eventually he said “Gosh you know what I did! It was so confusing in there. I must have grabbed the wrong phone.”
So, next time if anyone even remotely thinks of laying his hands on the World No. 1’s phone, be prepared to face the music!
Serena Williams, undoubtedly bowled over everyone at the restaurant with her courage and impromptu reaction. When she returned, quite deservedly, she received a standing ovation from her fellow diners.
The ever-inspiring Serena concluded her post by calling it a ‘win for the ladies’ and asked them to ‘step up to any challenge and not be a victim but a hero’.
