WTA Indian Wells 2012 - Sania Mirza reaches second round

India’s Sania Mirza overcame a slow start to beat 113th-ranked German Kristina Barrois 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and reach the second round of the prestigious BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Wednesday.

The Indian ace is down to No. 130 in the singles rankings after knee surgery in September forced her to take four months off from the tour, and she has struggled to win singles matches since her return in January. Sania was 2-5 in singles in 2012 before this week.

The win was Sania’s second in as many meetings over Barrois. In the second round, she will meet Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain. The Spaniard is seeded 24th in the event.

Sania is also playing in doubles where she is seeded second alongwith Russian Elena Vesnina.
