WTA Indian Wells - Mixed fortunes for Sania Mirza

India’s Sania Mirza had a mixed day at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, winning her doubles match but falling in the singles draw.

The 130th ranked Mirza lost 6-2, 7-5 to the 24th seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in one hour and 25 minutes. The Indian led 5-2 in the second set but the Spaniard bounced back to win the last five games in a row.

In the doubles, Mirza, partnering with Russian Elena Vesnina, beat Russia’s Vera Dushevina and Israel’s Shahar Peer 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the secound round. The duo are seeded second in the women’s doubles draw, behind top seed Leizel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

Mirza is now 3-6 in singles action this year.
