What happened to Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital? Character’s fate explored

American actor Chris Robinson portrayed Rick Webber on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. Robinson tragically died on June 9, 2025, at the age of 86 due to heart failure in his sleep at his ranch near Sedona, Arizona.

According to the storyline of General Hospital, Rick Webber was introduced in the daytime drama as a professional doctor. Dr. Richard "Rick" Webber was the son of Helene Webber and the late Lars Webber. He was the older half-brother of Dr. Jeff Webber and Terri Arnett.

Rick's character was initially portrayed by Michael Gregory from 1976 to 1978. Later, Chris Robinson took over the role and played it from 1978 to 1986, and again in 2002 and 2013.

By the end of Rick's storyline on the show, his character was murdered by Scott Baldwin on August 9, 2002. Scott visited Laura several times at Shadybrook Sanitarium and later confessed to her about his involvement in Rick's death.

General Hospital: A glance at Rick Webber's character

According to the plot dynamics of General Hospital, Dr. Rick Webber was on a sabbatical in Africa in 1976. Everyone believed he had died in a plane crash. However, Rick was actually captured by African revolutionaries and held prisoner for nearly a year.

In 1979, Rick and Monica became romantically involved. Their romance developed while Monica was married to Dr. Alan Quartermaine. After a one-night stand with Rick, Monica found out she was pregnant.

She was unsure if the father was her husband, Alan, or Rick, her lover. Initially, she thought that Rick was the father of her child. As a result, Rick divorced Lesley so he and Monica could be together. Alan was hurt and humiliated and made several attempts to kill Rick and Monica.

After Lesley's presumed death in 1984, Rick married Mikey's biological mother, Ginny. Together, Rick and Ginny had a child named Rick Webber Jr. Rick accepted a job at New York General Hospital, and they decided to move to New York City on November 26, 1986.

Later, in the storyline of General Hospital, Rick was murdered by Scott Baldwin on August 9, 2002. He returned to Port Charles one last time on April 2, 2013, as a ghost to Monica and Tracy Quartermaine. During this visit, Rick aimed to make peace with Alan after several years. He also tried to encourage Monica and Tracy to do the same by forgiving Alan.

In addition to his role as Rick Webber on General Hospital, Robinson appeared in numerous films and television shows, enriching his acting portfolio. The late actor starred in popular productions such as Beast from Haunted Cave, Combat, 12 O'Clock High, The Bold and the Beautiful, Diary of a High School Bride, and Another World.

While pursuing his acting career in the entertainment industry, Robinson became a spokesman for Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup in 1984. The advertisements aired on national television, starting with the quote, "I'm not a doctor, but I do play one on TV."

In his personal life, Chris Robinson married artist and actress Jacquie Robinson. He fathered five sons from three earlier marriages. Among them was Taylor Joseph Robinson, who was cast as C.J. Garrison in the CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. Robinson tragically passed away on June 9, 2025, due to heart failure.
