On June 10, 2025, standup comedian and actress Wally Baram gave an account of how a rubber bullet left her mother wounded during the Los Angeles protests against U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration raids. According to the BBC, individuals began protesting on Friday in LA after immigration officers (ICE) started arresting people in areas with a major Latino population.

Wally Baram, a 22-year-old Mexican-Syrian artist, began her career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian, performing on established shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She later pursued her dream of screenwriting and has recently starred in the Amazon Prime show Overcompensating.

On Tuesday, Wally took to her Instagram stories and wrote that her 70-year-old mother got hit by a rubber bullet, which turned a peaceful protest violent. She also shared a graphic picture of her mother's bloody wound.

"Warning, next story graphic. They hit my mom 70-year-old Mexican woman in the back of the head with a rubber bullet. If there's ever evidence they are bringing violence to peaceful protest," Wally wrote.

Wally clarified that her mother got immediate medical aid and returned to the protest the next day. The 22-year-old actress further added that she was being asked why her mother was protesting at the age of seventy.

Responding with a funny take on the situation, Wally said,

"A lot of people asking me, why is a 70 year old woman (my mother) at a protest? fwiw a lot of you are new here and don't know I have an aburdly hot mom, she has abs, does a ton of salsa, it's like a whole thing. I told her people thought she was too old to protest and she said, 'I boutta be out here getting sooo many more smooches than them even with a little chunk of head missing'"

More about Wally Baram

During an interview with Elle (published on May 15, 2025), Wally Baram shared that she initially wanted to be a cowgirl, but changed her mind when she started taking horse riding classes, admitting it was "way too much labor."

"My body’s clearly not built for lifting and riding, and my legs don’t fit around a horse quite so much," Wally added.

Wally Baram also took a gap year before college to explore stand-up comedy, sitcom writing, and acting, telling herself that if she failed at them, she would study economics instead. She eventually joined college after her gap year, but dropped out a year and a half later.

Baram shared that she went on to write for the 2023 drama series, Shrinking, and the 2019 fantasy series What We Do in the Shadows. Later, she got hired to write for Overcompensating, where she also landed the role of Carmen.

During an interview with Marie Claire published in May 2025, Wally shared that while reading early scripts for the show, she related to Carmen's character and was even told by the show's creator, Benito Skinner, that she was "kind of this girl."

"I related to her so much that when I had my meeting with Benny over writing, he was like, 'You are kind of this girl.' When Benny told me, 'I want it to be you,' my mind was tremendously blown. Even now, I'm still like, What the heck?" Wally Baram said.

Subsequently, in an interview with Vanity Fair on May 22, 2025, Wally shared how deeply she identified with the character, stating, "It just felt like me."

"This curly-, frizzy-haired girl from New Jersey who’s awkward and can’t seem to do the same social sparring that people do to establish themselves in a community. She wants to be a part of something so badly. So much of my life was overcompensating romantically – not even successfully. I just wanted to be loved."

Released on May 15, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video, Overcompensating is an eight-episode American comedy-drama that follows the story of Benny as he navigates his life through college as a football player.
