It looks like James Gunn has chosen his pick for Jonathan Kent in Superman, and it is none other than The Walking Dead actor Pruitt Taylor-Vince. The actor will be joining the already-stacked cast and will play the role of Kal-El's adopted Earth father, Jonathan Kent, who also gives him the name Clark Kent and is someone essential to his character.

Pruitt Taylor-Vince's casting as Jonathan Kent, aka Pa Kent, in Superman comes right in the middle of the film's shoot. The news was originally broken by The Wrap. Vince will be the next actor to portray the character after Kevin Costner previously played the last big-screen iteration in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Why is Jonathan Kent an important character in Superman?

Superman's origins are something that everyone knows. As a baby, Kal-El was sent in a spaceship to planet Earth by his biological father, Jor-El, due to the imminent destruction of the planet Krypton. Landing in Smallville, Kansas, an infant Kal-El was discovered by Jonathan Kent and his wife Martha Kent, and the couple adopted the kid, giving him the name Clark Kent.

Raising him as an Earthling, the Kents are an essential part of Superman's story as they help establish the bridge between his Kryptonian and human heritage. Jonathan and Martha teach him the ways of Earth, and during his childhood, Clark learns about his Kryptonian roots too, which inspires him to use his powers for good. This is due to the way Jonathan and Martha raised him.

Jonathan Kent is especially essential to Clark because of how his death sets up an internal struggle within the Man of Steel. With the powers that Clark has, he can do anything, but when his father suffers a heart attack and dies in the comics, he realizes that he can't save everyone.

Who are in the cast of James Gunn's Superman?

Pruitt Taylor-Vince will be joining David Corenswet, who will be playing the titular character in the James Gunn-directed DC film. Aside from that, the film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the arch-nemesis of the Man of Steel.

The supporting cast for the film includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and more. Milly Alcock's Supergirl is rumored to make an appearance in the film as well.

The movie is currently shooting and began production at the end of February. The main logo for the film is heavily inspired by the Kingdom Come symbol that was created by Alex Ross. This is also set to be the first theatrical film set in James Gunn's new DC Universe.

Currently, the plot for the film is being kept under wraps as not much information is available on it. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
