On February 6, 2025, Lil Wayne appeared in a commercial for Cetaphil and fans noted hints of a possible album launch for Tha Carter VI on June 6, 2025. He was disappointed because he did not get to perform at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show which took place in his home town of New Orleans.
In the February 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Wayne explained:
“This campaign made perfect sense to me.”
He added:
“The world knew I was disappointed, but what they didn’t know was that it made me determined to deliver something way bigger.”
Yet, fans noticed several hints in the commercial, such as jersey numbers and mentions of the 6/6 date from the scoreboards. At some point, Lil Wayne was pictured in a recording studio, and he was asked if he planned to attend the Super Bowl, but he responded, “Nah, this is time sensitive.” The final shot in the clip showed a “Do Not Disturb” sign on a studio door, saying “Do Not Disturb ‘Til 06-06-25 Carter VI.”
Ahead of the album release, fans got a glimpse of The Days track featuring Bono in ESPN’s NBA Finals ads.
A genre-blending lineup: Tha Carter VI by Lil Wayne
The collection of Tha Carter albums is a major part of Lil Wayne’s legacy. With The Carter I (2004), Wayne teamed up with Mannie Fresh to introduce southern-inspired beats.
Fans applauded him for the lyrics in Tha Carter II (2005) and Tha Carter III (2008) turned out to be a major hit with songs like Lollipop and A Milli, earning him a Best Rap Album Grammy. The album Tha Carter IV (2011) was successful, thanks in part to tracks such as 6 Foot 7 Foot, but it only got mixed reviews from critics.
After years of label issues, Tha Carter V (2018) reportedly explored personal themes like mental health and family, with features from Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar.
Tha Carter VI, which came out on June 6, 2025, has now become another important step forward for the artist. The songs on the latest album mix various genres and feature artists, namely Bono, Andrea Bocelli, Wyclef Jean, Miley Cyrus, Kodak Black, Machine Gun Kelly, and Wayne’s son, Kameron Carter. Ye (Kanye West) and Wheezy are also part of the production, per Billboard.
