Judge Arun Subramanian recently ordered an investigation into rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs' restricted phone usage from the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he is currently detained amid his trial for s*x trafficking and racketeering. This came after his legal team claimed the rapper was unable to make phone calls to communicate with them, as per an AllHipHop report published on June 8, 2025.

Diddy is reportedly allowed 300 minutes of phone calls per month. Following the complaint, the MDC confirmed that the rapper's phone minutes have not run out, claiming the issue might stem from a technical problem rather than a usage cap.

Additionally, Diddy's legal team has also filed a formal request to increase the rapper's phone minutes from 300 to 500 to facilitate prolonged phone conversations with his legal team amid the trial.

The request also asked that the rapper be allowed extended video conferencing calls with his legal team till 9 pm to ensure smoother communication between them during weekends and outside usual court hours. The judge has yet to decide on the request at the time of writing this article.

Following Diddy's arrest in September 2024, he was denied bail multiple times after the prosecution argued that he was a flight risk. Additionally, they claimed the rapper may engage in witness tampering if left unguarded.

The trial is currently in its sixth week, with the jury hearing detailed testimonies from several witnesses like Cassie Ventura and Kid Cudi. The former accused him of assault, abuse, and forced coercion in sex acts with male escorts (dubbed as "freak-offs") during their relationship.

Meanwhile, Cudi testified that Diddy was behind his Porsche being blown up in 2012. For the uninitiated, Ventura and Cudi had briefly been romantically involved in 2011.

Diddy's legal team requests judge for a mistrial

Diddy's legal team has asked Judge Arun Subramanian for a mistrial for the second time since the rapper's sex trafficking trial began on May 5. On June 7, the defense filed a letter addressing the judge, requesting a mistrial due to alleged "prosecutorial misconduct" regarding the testimony of Bryana Bongolan, Cassie Ventura's friend.

During her testimony last week, Bongolan claimed that the rapper dangled her from the 17th-floor balcony of Ventura's Los Angeles apartment in 2016. Alexandra Shapiro, one of the defense attorneys, has accused Bondolon of perjury, writing that both Ventura and Bondolon had provided "demonstrably false" evidence and had "doubled down, using this false testimony to obtain a ruling admitting inadmissible hearsay evidence about it as well, all to present a false narrative to the jury."

“In this trial the government has presented testimony that it knew or should have known was materially false related to its allegation that Mr. Combs dangled Bryana Bongolan from the balcony of Cassie Ventura’s apartment in September 2016. Accordingly, to avoid an unfair conviction in this case the Court should grant a mistrial,” the letter stated.

During her testimony, Bongolon had claimed the alleged balcony incident occurred on September 26. However, in the recent letter, Shapiro wrote that Diddy had been staying at the Trump Hotel in New York City between September 24 and 29, 2016, and was allegedly not in Los Angeles during the date that Bongolon mentioned in her testimony.

"The government knew or should have known this testimony was perjured, and that Ms. Bongolan could not possibly have been injured by Mr. Combs on a Los Angeles balcony in the early morning hours of September 26, or even the day before that. It bears emphasis that the use of the perjured testimony regarding the balcony incident is just one example of prosecutorial misconduct during this trial," the letter read.

Judge Arun Subramanian will likely make a ruling regarding the request for a mistrial when the trial resumes on June 9. The defense had previously requested a mistrial over the testimony of a Los Angeles Fire Department arson investigator, who testified that he oversaw Kid Cudi's car explosion case.

On May 28, the defense called into question the prosecution's direct examination of the arson investigator regarding the LAPD allegedly destroying fingerprints related to a break-in at Cudi's home weeks before his car was bombed. For context, Cudi had testified that he believed Combs was behind the alleged break-in in 2011.

Diddy's lawyers claimed that the prosecution's questions suggested to the jury that Combs was somehow involved in the destruction of the fingerprints. However, the request for a mistrial was immediately denied, and the trial continued.

In other news, Diddy's former girlfriend is scheduled to resume her testimony on June 9. The witness, who chose to remain anonymous, is testifying under the pseudonym 'Jane.' During her testimony on June 7, Jane claimed that she dated Diddy between 2021 and 2024, adding that she was often instructed to participate in "hotel nights," where the rapper directed her to have sex with male escorts.
