Kanye has changed his legal name for the second time. In 2021, he changed his name from Kanye Omari West to Ye West. According to the media outlet, in the paperwork, his new legal name, Ye Ye, is mentioned under "manager or member name" for his businesses, including Yeezy Apparel, Yeezy Record Label, LLC, and Getting Out Our Dreams Inc.

However, the rapper or his legal representatives haven't yet confirmed this name change.

On June 1, 2025, he tweeted that he would stop using his current X account, as it is under his old name.

"Ima finally stop using the @kanyewest twitter cause my name is Ye. Gonna start a ye account and it is what it is," the rapper wrote.

In an interview with radio host Big Boy in June 2018, the rapper explained why he chose the name Ye. He stated that the word appears frequently in the Bible, and it means "you". West claimed his moniker represents "our good, our bad, our confusion, everything."

"I believe Ye is the most commonly used word in the Bible. In the Bible, it means 'you.' So, I'm you, I'm us, it's us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye—just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion, everything... more of a reflection of who we are," he stated.

Kanye West previously demanded that the music industry refer to him as Ye and called his former legal name a "sl*ve name."

Kanye West's chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, released an open letter on February 26, 2024. The letter urged the music industry to use Ye instead of Kanye.

Yiannopoulos then publicly addressed streaming platforms, publishers, stores, unions, lyrics websites, and data resellers, urging them to use the rapper's new name, explaining West sacrificed his brand by changing his moniker. Yiannopoulos stated that this change was made "fully, legally, and permanently."

"He didn't take the decision to change his name, potentially sacrificing some of the immense value captured by the brand of 'Kanye West,' lightly. The change was made fully, legally, and permanently. This is who he is now. His name is Ye," the letter reads.

West's chief of staff stated that the open letter was released because the rapper wanted to be recognized by the industry as Ye, not his "sl*ve name." The letter also stated West was influential and "on par with presidents and popes."

"He has on several occasions referred to it as his sl8ve name. Ye is a black man in America who wants the right to full self-determination just like everyone else," the open letter states.

The album features Future, Playboi Carti, and Jack Harlow, among others. It is available for streaming on YouTube Music, Spotify, and Tidal.
