American singer Justin Timberlake will no longer face drunk driving charges after securing a favorable plea deal. The Can't Stop the Feeling artist was initially charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and was arrested earlier this year in Sag Harbor, New York. However, the DWI charge has now been dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to a lesser traffic violation.
Timberlake's lawyer, Edward Burke, has always maintained his client's innocence. In the court hearing on Friday, July 26, Burke had said,
“He was not intoxicated. I’ll say it again. Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated. And we are very confident that charge, that criminal charge, will be dismissed.”
As a result, Justin Timberlake is expected to pay a fine ranging from $300 to $500, depending on the judge's final decision on September 13.
Justin Timberlake avoids jail time after DWI arrest in Sag Harbor
The plea deal greatly minimizes the gravity of Justin Timberlake's legal situation. From a simple DWI offense, which could bring up to one year of imprisonment and a $2,500 fine, the singer now receives only a minor penalty. Even though the charges were dropped, Timberlake will not be able to legally drive in New York for almost a year.
This suspension of his license was a result of his refusal to provide a breathalyzer test when he was arrested, something that is a standard procedure in New York.
Justin Timberlake was arrested at around 4:30 a.m. on June 18, while on a vacation in Sag Harbor, which is in the Hamptons. The Grammy-winning singer and Emmy-winning actor, who had been out in town with his friends, was reportedly driving home after breaking a stop sign and swerving out of his lane.
However, when Timberlake agreed with the police that he had "one martini" before driving, he was arrested, and charged with DWI.
After his arrest, Justin Timberlake was formally charged and was also released to wait for his trial without any amount that was required to be paid as bail. However, this did not stop Timberlake from going on his Forget Tomorrow world tour. He was seen performing a few days after the incident in Chicago on 21 June.
Justin Timberlake's plea agreement will reduce his charges and his fine will be set bringing him to court by September 13. Despite the fines expected to be between $300 and $500, the singers’ driving suspension conditions last close to a year. Last month, Timberlake had a virtual appearance in court where he entered a 'not guilty' plea to a modified misdemeanor charge of drunk driving.
His legal team also withdrew a motion to dismiss the case, which led to the current plea agreement.
Although there was legal action against Justin Timberlake, he has not stopped his professional activities. Responding to the events, the singer mentioned it indirectly at the June 21 live performance saying:
"It's been a tough week. I know sometimes I’m hard to love, but you keep on loving me, and I love you right back."
According to reports, Timberlake's wife, Jessica Biel, has been affected by the unfortunate incident. Several of the sources said that Biel was "extremely upset" when she got to know that her husband had been arrested. The actress, who was working in New York at the time, felt the dire consequences of the scandal. According to an insider,
"She was shocked to hear the news and had no idea as she was working. She was really worried about him."
He continues to perform as part of his Forget Tomorrow world tour, his first in five years. Timberlake has also been involved in multiple film projects, including his most recent role in Reptile, where he stars alongside Benicio del Toro.
