The Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82. His family announced his demise on the same day via his official Instagram account (@brianwilsonlive), but did not disclose details. The cause of death also remains undisclosed.
“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father, Brian Wilson, has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy,” the post, accompanying a recent photo of Wilson, read.
The Beach Boys co-founder, Al Jardine, also confirmed the news with the press.
For the uninitiated, The Beach Boys was founded in Hawthorne, California, in 1961, by Brian Wilson and his brothers, Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine.
Later, Bruce Johnston joined the rock band in the mid-1960s, as did David Marks. Other former members of The Beach Boys include Rick Fataar and Blondie Chaplin.
Together, the group went on to achieve global fame and success, and is remembered for hit songs, including Kokomo, God Only Knows, California Girls, and Darlin’, among others.
All you need to know about The Beach Boys’ original lineup amid Brian Wilson’s demise
Brian Wilson, the oldest of the three Wilson brothers, was born on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California. He started playing piano and making music at a young age while growing up in Hawthorne. At 19, he founded The Beach Boys and became their lead vocalist, songwriter, bassist, and keyboardist.
In 1964, he also began a solo music career while still working with the band. In 1982, he nearly died from a drug overdose. He later returned to The Beach Boys for their 50th anniversary in 2012.
Brian Wilson was married twice and had two biological children and five adoptive children. In 2015, a biopic of him starring John Cusack was released, titled Love & Mercy. The following year, Brian published a memoir, I Am Brian Wilson. He struggled with mental health in 2019 and took a step back from the limelight until his demise in June 2025.

Dennis Wilson was the middle sibling of Brian and Carl Wilson. He was born on December 4, 1944, and began playing piano as a 14-year-old. Reportedly, Brian and Mike Love didn’t want to include him in the band originally; however, upon their mother’s request, Dennis joined as a drummer and remained with the band until the late 1970s.
However, he was ousted due to substance and alcohol abuse and later went on to pursue a solo career. He released the album, Pacific Ocean Blue, in 1977. He married four different women and had five kids.
Dennis Wilson became infamous for his association with cult leader and convicted murderer Charles Manson. He passed away on December 28, 1983, from a drowning accident, aged 39.

The youngest Wilson brother, Carl, was born in Los Angeles on December 21, 1946, and joined The Beach Boys as a guitarist and backup vocalist when he was a teen. He temporarily left the band in 1980 to pursue a solo career before returning three years later.
Carl was married twice and had two kids. He passed away on February 7, 1998, from lung cancer, at the age of 51.
Mike Love, who is the cousin of the three Wilson brothers, is also one of the original members of The Beach Boys. He was born in March 1941 in LA and is currently 84 years old. The multi-instrumentalist and lead vocalist was the seniormost member of the band. He also lent his hand to songwriting and has been the only constant member since its formation.
Love also pursued a solo career and released four albums. He was married five times and has at least seven kids. His 2016 memoir, Good Vibrations, revealed intimate details of The Beach Boys.
Unlike Mike Love and the Wilson brothers, their friend and original bandmate, Al Jardine, 82, was a native of Ohio and was born in September 1942. However, he was raised in Hawthorne, CA, where he met the group.
Jardine has been The Beach Boys’ banjoist and rhythm guitarist. He had an on-and-off stint with the band from the 1970s to the 1990s. Al married twice and is a father of four. He has authored a children’s book and released solo musical projects.
Al Jardine reunited with The Beach Boys on their 50th anniversary and now continues to do his own music tours. Jardine was replaced by David Marks, 76, as a rhythm guitarist and had an on-and-off stint with them.
Singer-songwriter Bruce Johnston, 82, multi-instrumentalist Ricky Fataar, 72, and bassist-vocalist Blondie Chaplin, 73, were other future members of the rock band.
The Beach Boys have been globally famous for over six decades and have sold over 100 million records and have led 80 songs charts. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and have been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.
