The Edmonton Oilers dropped a heartbreaking decision in Game 2 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, 5-4 in double overtime on Friday night at Rogers Place.

Brad Marchand scored twice, getting the game-winner at 8:05 of the second extra frame to even the series for the Florida Panthers. Dmitry Kulikov, Seth Jones, and Sam Bennett got the other tallies for the Panthers. Meanwhile, Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl, and Corey Perry got the goals for the Edmonton Oilers.

#3 Kasperi Kapanen

Kasperi Kapanen had a rough night in Game 2 after showing promise earlier this postseason. He hit the ice for 14:39 of ice time, playing at times on the second line with Leon Draisaitl.

As the Edmonton Oilers tried to clear the zone, Kapanen missed the puck, turning it over. The play came back into the Oilers' zone with Kapanen unable to get back. That situation allowed Seth Jones to walk in and bury the game-tying goal into the wide-open cage.

Kapenen saw his ice time reduced throughout the night as the Oilers looked to find the equalizer late in the game.

#2 Vasily Podkolzin

Vasily Podkolzin was virtually invisible in Game 2, hitting the ice for 12:45. Considering the game went to double overtime, his ice time was quite limited. He saw 17 shifts, producing two shots on goal and delivering one hit.

Podkolzin, along with fellow fourth-liners Viktor Arvidsson and Mattias Janmark, didn’t see much ice time, particularly as the Oilers trailed throughout the third period.

#1 Stuart Skinner

Edmonton Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner had an overall solid game, making 37 saves on 42 shots in the double-overtime affair.

However, it was the two goals Skinner allowed to Brad Marchand that made the difference in the game. Both goals were ones Skinner would surely love to have back.

The play came on a puck Ryan Nugent-Hopkins bobbled at the Florida blue line. Marchand streaked in on the breakaway and went five-hole on Skinner to put the Cats ahead 4-3.

Then, in double overtime, Marchand struck again on a similar play. Here’s a look:

Marchand made the same move on Skinner, beating him through the five-hole. Leon Draisaitl did a great job of getting back into the play, nearly knocking the puck off Marchand’s stick. The puck barely trickled through Skinner’s legs for the game-winner.

Unfortunately, Skinner was unable to bail out his teammates when they needed it the most on two separate occasions.

The Oilers will be looking to take a 2-1 series lead as the scene now shifts to Florida for Game 3 on Monday night.
