3 major takeaways from Detroit Red Wings' 5-2 win over Nashville Predators
#3. Alex Lyon kept Red Wings in the game
There has been much speculation surrounding the Red Wings’ goaltending situation. But that was not the case on Saturday as Alex Lyon kept Detroit in the game. Lyon made 37 saves as the Predators put early pressure on Detroit.
In particular, Lyon robbed Steven Stamkos during a Preds’ 5-on-3 power play in the second period. Stamkos rifled a one-timer that Lyon stopped by sliding across to make a huge save. The save was crucial at the time as it kept the score at 2-1 in favor of Detroit.
While the Preds would eventually tie the game at two in the third, Lyon bought his team enough time to come back and put the game away for good.
#2. Red Wings played solid defense
There were times in the game when the Predators seemed to outplay the Red Wings. However, Detroit managed to keep its cool and avoid making critical mistakes. In addition to killing the two-man advantage in the second period, the Wings managed to play structured defense in front of Lyon.
The strong defensive showing bodes well for the Red Wings who need to turn things around. As such, Saturday's performance and win could be a good indication that the Red Wings are on their way to fixing the issues that have plagued them thus far this season.
#1. Detroit made a third-period push that paid off
Instead of crumbling after giving up the lead early in the third, the Red Wings mounted a strong push that culminated with Copp scoring the go-ahead goal roughly three minutes after Stamkos tied the game.
Then, they added another goal with Simon Edvinsson popping a shot into the empty net to make it 4-2. Copp soon after scored another empty netter to seal the win.
Given the rough start to their season, this sort of victory could be the spark for a turnaround to help the Red Wings get back into the playoff conversation.
