When Connor McDavid suffered a career-threatening knee injury

Connor McDavid, the captain of the Edmonton Oilers, suffered a knee injury on April 6, 2019, during a game against the Calgary Flames. He hit the boards and his knee twisted awkwardly. He was initially diagnosed with a moderate strain in his PCL after swelling was noticed around his knee.

However, after seeking a second medical opinion in Colorado, it was revealed that the injury was much more severe. The evaluation showed that his PCL was completely torn, as well as the meniscus on both sides of his knee. He further had a cracked fibula and a muscle (popliteus) had been completely detached from the bone.

McDavid was forced to miss the remainder of the 2018-19 NHL season, including the playoffs. Nonetheless, he was able to make a full recovery and return to play the following season. He played in all 56 games during the shortened 2020-21 NHL season and recorded 41 points.
