On Saturday, Seth Jarvis and the Carolina Hurricanes reportedly agreed to an eight-year extension worth a total of $63.2 million. With an average annual value of $7.9 million and a cap hit of $7.5m per year, Jarvis will be one of the Hurricanes' top-paid players. Only fellow wingers Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov will make more than him next year.

While the contract is certainly massive for a player who is just 22 years old, Jarvis has quickly emerged as one of the best young stars in the league. In addition to playing in over 80 games in each of the past two seasons, Jarvis is also fresh off a season where he logged career highs in scoring and assists.

The NHL community was quick to react to the news, with some optimistic about the extension, and others left feeling as though the Hurricanes overpaid:

"Canes love overpaying their own players," one fan wrote.

Others saw the benefits of the deal despite the high valuation on the contract:

"I love this deal because Jarvy is getting his bag but also cap flexibility!" - one added.
"Encourage you to read the story because the cap hit is actually going to be $7.5m and not the usual $7.9m because the #Canes and Jarvis have done a unique deal," another said.

Others weighed in on what the deal could mean for others players negotiating their own extensions:

"Laffy seeing this and knowing his number is going up even more. Good for Carolina to get a deal done, Jarvis is a player they can't afford to lose," a fan said.

Now, with an eight-year extension on the books, the Hurricanes will have Seth Jarvis under contract until 2032. After the 2031-32 season, Jarvis will become an unrestricted free agent.
