Johnny Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith, shared her feelings ahead of the game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames on Friday. Johnny had a deep connection with both teams. He was drafted by the Flames in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft and played with them for nine years. He then joined Blue Jackets in 2022, where he played for two seasons before his tragic accident.
Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew, 29, died in a bike crash on Aug. 29. They were struck by a suspected drunk driver near their hometown in New Jersey while visiting for their sister’s wedding.
CBJCENTER posted an Instagram post, featuring a special #13 jersey for the game against Calgary. The jersey is meant to honor Johnny.
“Thought we’d switch up the graphic today, in honour of #13. 💙❤️ We’d love to see the Jackets pull off a win today, but regardless of outcome we know Johnny and Matthew will be proud,” cbjcenter captioned the post.
Sharing the jersey in her Instagram story, Meredith wrote:
“Favorite ppl in one place,” referencing the teams Johnny played for during his NHL career.
The game holds special meaning for both teams. It marks the first time they’ve met since Johnny’s tragic passing in August. Johnny had forged deep connections with both teams and their fans.
The game begins at 3:00 PM EST, with Calgary at 12-7-4 and Columbus at 9-9-3. Fans and players will honor Johnny’s legacy before the game starts.
