Linus Ullmark is not leaving the Ottawa Senators any time soon. The goalie just officially signed a four-year, $33 million contract to remain a part of the team for the foreseeable future. One of the most renowned goalies in the sport, Ottawa didn't want to let him go anywhere else in free agency after they traded for him.
This comes just after Jeremy Swayman signed an eight-year $66 million deal. He reportedly turned down a $64 million deal but did sign yesterday. Now, the market for a good goalkeeper has just gone up.
NHL fans were quick to point out that Swayman's deal undoubtedly impacted the contract for Ullmark, while others believe the Senators overpaid for the player.
"Terrible contract," one said.
"Smart of Linus to sign before they see how the play goes," another noted.
"Holy f**k this is sick! Wasn't expecting the extension yet but happy!" one exclaimed.
"Swayman got his buddy paid. Love to see it," another chimed in.
Swayman signed with the Boston Bruins, Ullmark's former team, for $8.25 million per season. That is exactly the AAV that Ullmark, who hasn't yet suited up for his new team in an NHL regular season game, signed for on his extension, albeit for two fewer years.
Senators president "excited" to sign Linus Ullmark
In the wake of the Linus Ullmark extension, Ottawa Senators president and HM Steve Staios said they were "excited to have" Ullmark signed and locked in before the start of the regular season.

He continued via NHL:
“In a short window of time, Linus has been able to see the culture we’re trying to grow with our hockey club and his family has experienced the community spirit of Ottawa-Gatineau.”
Ullmark also expressed his excitement for signing, saying that at this stage of his career, he wants to emphasize what's good for his family:
"We felt that ever since we came here, it's been a great fit," said Ullmark. "I'm hoping this can help change things for the better in this organization for this city."
Ullmark will play his first regular season game for the Sens tomorrow against the Florida Panthers.
