The Ottawa Senators, officially known as the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. They currently compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.

The Ottawa Senators were founded in 1992 by Bruce Firestone, then president of Terrace Investments. It was after years of public champaign that the NHL decided to award Ottawa a new franchise which would begin play in the 1992-93 season. However, ownership changed in 1993 to Rod Bryden, a businessman from Ottawa. This happened due to the arena development process and difficulties in financing.

The Senators have since been able to win four Division Championships, a President Trophy and Conference Championship each. The team was largely successful during the late 1990s and the early 2000s period. Additionally, the Senators have minor league affiliations with the Belleville Senators of the AHL and the Allen Americans of the ECHL. The team currently plays their home games at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Ottawa Sеnators History

The city of Ottawa had been home to the original Senators, a founding NHL franchise. The team existed between 1883 and 1954 and was the first club in Ontario. The team was officially known as the Ottawa Hockey Club and played in the NHL from 1917 until 1934.

The team was acknowledged as the greatest teams of the early days of the sport. The team won 11 Stanley Cups and 8 Division Championships throughout its existence. The team was hailed as Canada’s greatest team in the first half of the 20th century.

The club folded after the 1933-34 season due to financial difficulties. The team decided that it could not continue in Ottawa and wanted to move away from the city. The team relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, where the team became the St. Louis Eagles and played a single season in the NHL (1934-35). The Senators continued as an amateur and later as a semi-professional team in Ouebec’s senior men’s leagues.

Present Times

The present Senators team was founded in 1992 as a result of multiple public campaigns to bring back the team. The entire campaign was led by former owner Bruce Firestone along with colleagues Cyril Leeder and Randy Sexton.

The team hired former NHL player Mel Bridgman as its first General Manager and hired Rick Bowness as the head coach for the newly formed team. The New Senators were placed in the Adams Division of the Wales Conference and played their first game against the Montereal Canadians on October 8, 1992. The team won that night however it was one the very few highlights of the season as the team won only 9 more games that season, eventually equalling the San Jose Sharks for the worst record in the league.

The following few seasons were headlined by changes in ownership, coaching staff and poor performances. The club saw a revival with the joining of Jacques Martin as the head coach. The team qualified for the playoffs for the first time under his mentorship and had a majorly successful period up until the 2000s. The team is currently trying to restore it's old glory.

Ottawa Sеnators Ownеr

Thе Ottawa Senators are currently owned by Michael Andlauer. Andlauer is a Canadian businеssman who is the founder and CEO of the Andlauer Healthcare Group. He also founded businesses like ATS Healthcare, Accuristix and Bulldog Capital Partners. Andlauer was formerly a minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens NHL team

The team was previously owned by Eugene Melnyk. However, his unfortunate death in 2022 led the management into chaos. Soon after, in November 2022, the team engaged a New York City investment banker to facilitate a sale of the team. On June 13, 2023, the Senators announced that a purchase agreement had been signed with a group of investors headed by Michael Andlauer. It is worth noting that Andlauer became a majority owner along with his partners, Eugene Melnyk’s daughters and a group of Canadian businessmen on September 21, 2023.
