Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield had a hilarious reaction when his teammate Lane Hutson was surprised with the Calder Trophy during a dinner Tuesday night in Lake Barrington, Illinois, surrounded by more than 50 friends and family.
Hutson, a 21-year-old defenseman, was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Year for the 2024–25 season.
Caufield’s family had told him the event was just a surprise party to celebrate Hutson being a Calder finalist. However, the real surprise came when they handed him the actual Calder Trophy right then and there.
The NHL Instagram account posted the video on Tuesday, and Caufield shared his thoughts on it in the comments section.
"Can't believe I wasn't invited to this...," he wrote.
Hutson topped all rookies in scoring this season. He got 6 goals and 60 assists for 66 points in 82 games. His 60 assists tied Larry Murphy’s 1980–81 mark for the most ever by a rookie defenseman.
Overall, his 66 points ranked third all-time among rookie blueliners, trailing only Murphy and Brian Leetch.
Drafted 62nd overall by Montreal in 2022. Hutson also became the first Hab to win the Calder Trophy since goalie Ken Dryden in the 1971–72 season.
Lane Hutson comments on winning the Calder Trophy
To win the Calder Trophy, Lane Hutson beat out fellow finalists Dustin Wolf of the Calgary Flames and Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks.
Hutson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for the Canadiens, saying:
"Rookie of the Year award, I just feel really fortunate and lucky to be part of Montreal Canadiens, and to be a part of a such great support system with all my friends and family. So, to be able to do what I love every day, it's been a dream.”
“And, I wouldn't be here without the great support I have of friends, family and teammates and coaches. So, it's definitely special."
Lane Hutson received a whopping 165 of 191 first-place votes from the Professional Hockey Writers Association to take home the honor.
The Montreal Canadiens made it back to the playoffs this season for the first time in four years. They grabbed the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Their run, however, was cut short as they were knocked out by the Washington Capitals in five games in Round 1.
