Captain Jacob Trouba shared his thoughts following the New York Rangers' disappointing 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night. The defeat was the Rangers' fifth straight, dropping them to 12-9-1 on the season.
The game got off to a dreadful start for New York, failing to register a shot on goal until halfway through the first period. Philadelphia dominated the opening frame, outshooting the Rangers 15-4. Travis Konecny and Bobby Brink scored for the Flyers, giving them a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Rangers captain Jacob Trouba expressed his frustration with the Rangers' poor start.
"You know it's not good enough. I think everybody knows that. Nobody needs to announce that or scream or kick and yell," Trouba said."I think as a group, as professionals, I think you know when it's not good enough, it wasn't good enough as a start."
The Rangers rebounded with a stronger second period, cutting the Flyers' lead to 2-1 through Vincent Trocheck's stirke.
"We gave ourselves a chance going into the third with decent second period and just couldn't find it in the third," Jacob Trouba added.
Philadelphia restored their two-goal cushion in the third period with Konecny's second of the night for the win.
Jacob Trouba's takeaways from the Rangers' recent loss
Jacob Trouba reflected on what the team needs to improve going forward. He acknowledged that the Rangers are in a slump.
"I think we got to try to find a stop guys, working guys, want to want to find a stop to this and get back on the right path.” Trouba said on team's struggles.
“We're going through a little bit. And like I said before, this is, this is kind of where teams are built and where you learn where we are."
Trouba believes the Rangers need to band together during this rough patch to become a better team. Coach Peter Laviolette criticized the team's poor performance, especially in the first period.
"We left the game in the first period, and that can't happen for a team sitting here looking for ways to win hockey games. Just the work in the first period wasn't good," Laviolette said.
The Rangers will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
