Calgary Flames goaltender Dan Vladar showed off a new design on his mask, paying tribute to the late Gaudreau brothers.
The mask features a bold Flames logo on the front with Vladar’s number 80 on the chin. To the side, airbrushed black-and-white images of both Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau are featured. Johnny is featured on the left side with Matthew on the right.
Here’s a look at the mask design:
Vladar unveiled the mask as a tribute to the Gaudreau brothers as part of the first meeting between the Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets this season at Nationwide Arena on Friday.
Johnny Gaudreau was part of the Flames’ organization for more than a decade, playing some of his best hockey while wearing a Flames uniform. He maintained close friendships with former Calgary teammates, leaving a lasting impact on everyone in the organization.
Dan Vladar’s new mask design is just one of the multitude of tributes paid to the Gaudreau brothers following their tragic death this summer.
Dan Vladar is having a solid season for Calgary Flames
Dan Vladar was looked upon as the future starting goaltender for the Calgary Flames after the team dealt Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils this past offseason.
Vladar and Dustin Wolf have shared the crease so far, playing well in leading a Flames team that wasn’t expected to be in second place in the Pacific Division at this point in the season.
The Czech native has played in 11 games this season, racking up four wins and one shutout. Furthermore, his 2.59 GAA and .905 SV% look solid.
In his last five outings, Vladar has notched one regulation win and two overtime victories to go with two defeats. He’s not given up more than three goals over that span, playing against tough division rivals like the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks.
Vladar was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the third round of the 2015 draft. He played in 28 games for the Bruins before being traded to the Flames for a third-round pick in 2021. Since then, Vladar has found a home in Calgary.
With the Flames looking to contend for a playoff spot this season, the team will be counting on Vladar and Wolf to continue backstopping the Flames throughout the rest of the regular season and, hopefully, the postseason, as well.
